The project is based around the typology of a cultural/religious community center, The United States is a melting pot of sorts where people of all beliefs and backgrounds come together and learn to live as one community. Islamic centers are critical parts of the community because it is where Muslim youth and adults alike can completely be themselves and express their Muslim identities.

The Essex County Jail, located at the corner of New Street and the former Wilsey Street, Newark

Researching the existing Islamic centers in Newark I found out that none of them offered enough program to serve the Muslim community of Newark.

The space design and it's programs will encompass the five pillars of Islam

The philosophy behind any mosque is to create a space for prayer, reflection and repentance, a space of learning and giving back to the community. The design aims to carry out the fundamentals through the proposal of an Islamic school and free library as well as a soup kitchen.

The space is to encompass the pillars of Islam and allow the space as a whole to be a pilgrimage in itself, from prayer to educating to serving he mankind.

And in turn programmatically the site comes together to represent Islam.

Conceptually the space wants to smoothly transition the worshipper from the busy outer world into the spiritual and embrace an inner experience.
